What's in the menu
Click the icon to open Flick's menu. Some items appear only when they apply; the table lists them in menu order.
| Menu item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Accessibility permission needed | Only while Flick doesn't have the permission. Opens System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility. |
| Couldn't check your license | Only when Flick hasn't been able to check your license for a while. Opens Settings › License. |
| Shortcut warnings | Only during a conflict, such as “⌥Tab is in use by another app”. Each has a submenu with what you can do. Shortcut conflict warnings |
| Search Windows | Opens Flick with search ready, like ⇧⌘Space. |
| Settings | Opens Settings. ⌘, does the same while the menu is open. |
| Check for Updates… | Checks for a new version now. How updates work |
| Enter License Key | Free version only. Opens Settings › License, where you paste your key. |
| Buy Flick | Free version only. Opens the pricing page. |
| Report a Problem… | Opens a draft email to support with Flick's version, your macOS version, your Mac's chip, your shortcut and panel position, and whether you have a license, never your license key. Nothing is sent until you send it. |
| Show Onboarding | Opens the welcome window again, to grant the permission or pick your shortcut and panel position. |
| Quit | Quits Flick. ⌘Q does the same while the menu is open. If Flick was using ⌘Tab, the macOS app switcher comes straight back. |
The installation guide shows the same menu as part of setting up.
Hide the icon
Turn off Show menu bar icon at the top of Settings › General. Or hold ⌘ and drag the icon out of the menu bar, the way macOS lets you remove most menu bar icons; Flick turns the setting off to match.
Flick keeps running either way: hold ⌥ and tap Tab, or press ⇧⌘Space, just as before. How to switch windows with Flick
To move the icon rather than hide it, hold ⌘ and drag it left or right along the menu bar.
Bring it back
-
Open Flick again
Open it from your Applications folder in Finder, or find it with Spotlight. If Flick is running, its Settings window opens. If it wasn't running, this starts it, still without the icon; open it once more to get to Settings.
-
Turn on Show menu bar icon
It's at the top of Settings › General. The icon comes back right away.
-
On macOS 26 or later, check System Settings › Menu Bar
If Show menu bar icon is on and you still don't see the icon, open System Settings › Menu Bar. Under Allow in the Menu Bar, apps that add items to the menu bar each have a switch: if Flick is listed and off, turn it on. macOS 14 and 15 don't have this list.
Other ways to open Settings
- The gear in Flick's panel. It's at the bottom of the panel; clicking it closes the panel and opens Settings.
- Open Flick again from Finder or Spotlight while it's running.
- Terminal. If Flick isn't running, this command starts it straight into Settings:
open -a Flick --args --settingsEvery setting, with its default, is in Flick's settings.
Why there's no Dock icon
Flick is a menu bar app: it waits in the background until you press ⌥Tab, so it has no Dock icon and doesn't appear in the macOS app switcher. While Settings, the welcome window or an update window is open, Flick gets a Dock icon and menus like any other app. They go away when you close the window.
Want Flick there after a restart?Turn on Launch at login at the top of Settings › General. With the icon hidden, nothing on screen tells you when Flick didn't start. Start Flick at login
Questions
Does hiding the icon turn Flick off?
No. Only the icon goes. Flick keeps running, and your shortcuts work as before.
How do I quit Flick with the icon hidden?
Open Flick from your Applications folder so Settings opens, then choose Flick › Quit Flick, or press ⌘Q. If Flick was using ⌘Tab, see get the macOS app switcher back.
Does Reset All Settings bring the icon back?
Yes, but it also puts every other setting back to its default, including your shortcuts and ignored apps. Turning on Show menu bar icon is all you need.
