How do I update Flick?

Choose Check for Updates… from Flick's menu bar menu, then click Install Update when a new version is ready. Flick can also check about once a day by itself, but it never installs anything without asking. Your settings, Accessibility permission and license are kept.

Automatic checks

The first time you open Flick, it doesn't ask about updates. The second time, it asks “Check for updates automatically?”:

  • Check Automatically checks about once a day, and when you open Flick if a day has passed since the last check.
  • Don't Check leaves it to you. Flick then goes online for updates only when you ask it to.

You can change your answer any time with Check for updates automatically in Settings › General, in the Updates group. Automatic checks only look: when a daily check finds a new version, Flick doesn't interrupt you. Its update window waits behind your other apps, and Flick's icon shows in the Dock with a badge until you look at it.

Check now

  1. Ask Flick to check

Click Flick's icon in the menu bar and choose Check for Updates…. While Settings is open, the same item is in the Flick menu, and Settings › General has a Check Now button next to your version number, such as Version 1.1.0. These work whether or not automatic checks are on.

  2. Read the result

If there's a new version, Flick shows what's new in it. If you already have the latest, Flick says you're up to date and offers Version History, which opens the changelog in your browser.

Install an update

The update window shows the release notes and three buttons:

ButtonWhat it does
Install UpdateDownloads the new version from flicknav.com, checks its signature, replaces Flick and opens it again.
Remind Me LaterCloses the window. The next check, automatic or by hand, shows the update again.
Skip This VersionAutomatic checks stop telling you about this version, and tell you about the next one. You can still download it yourself.

After Install Update, everything carries over: shortcuts, appearance, window options, browser tabs, ignored apps, the Accessibility permission and your license. There's no first-open approval to repeat, unlike a copy you download yourself. Every 1.x update is included with a license, and the free version gets the same updates.

Your window order after an update

An update quits and reopens Flick, and since 1.1, Flick keeps the order of your windows across that: just before it quits, it saves the order, and when it opens again, ⌥Tab still takes you back to the window you were in before.

  • It needs Flick 1.1 or later on both sides. The first update that keeps your order is the one after 1.1. Updating from 1.0 to 1.1 started with a fresh order, because 1.0 didn't save it.
  • It needs a quick reopen. The saved order is used only if Flick opens again within 10 minutes, without a restart of your Mac in between. Install Update reopens Flick right away, so that's normally the case.
  • It holds no titles. The file stores window numbers, each app's process number and launch time, and their order, never titles or app names, and Flick deletes it once it has read it. What Flick stores

Update by hand

Prefer to do it yourself, or chose Skip This Version? Get the latest Flick from the download page, quit Flick from its menu bar menu, and drag the new copy into your Applications folder, choosing Replace. The installation guide has the steps.

A new download needs approvingFlick is signed but not notarized, so macOS treats a copy you download yourself as new and asks you to approve it once, the same way as the first time. Your settings, permission and license are kept. Open the new copy from Applications rather than from the disk image; why Flick belongs in Applications.

What a check sends

A check is one secure request for a small file on flicknav.com that lists the latest version. It names the app and its version, and the version of the updater inside Flick. It doesn't send your preferred languages, a profile of your Mac, anything about your windows or settings, or a license key. Like any web request, it shows your IP address to the company that hosts flicknav.com.

The update itself is downloaded only after you click Install Update. Until you allow update checks, ask for one, or activate a license, the free version makes no network requests at all. The privacy policy says the same.

Questions

Can Flick install updates without asking me?

No. There's no setting for it: every update waits for you to click Install Update, so a new version never arrives in the middle of your work.

Which version do I have?

Settings › General shows it in the Updates group, and Settings › About shows the version and build number.

Will I have to pay for updates?

Not for Flick 1: every 1.x release is included with your license. A future major version, such as Flick 2, may be a paid upgrade, and you can keep using the 1.x version you have.
