Alternatives to HyperSwitch for Mac

HyperSwitch is a free app switcher that shows previews of the selected app's windows, so you can pick a window, not just an app. It's still a beta with no new download since early 2024, so this page covers the built-in tools and the maintained switchers that do the same job, with or without previews.

What HyperSwitch does well

HyperSwitch, from bahoom, calls itself a keyboard window switcher, and its screenshots show the idea: an app switcher like ⌘Tab with a row of previews of the selected app's windows, so one panel takes you to a particular window. It's free, and its latest build, 0.3.10-dev, added Apple silicon support and fixes for macOS 14 Sonoma. Its download page lists the requirement as “macOS High Sierra (13) ++” (High Sierra is macOS 10.13) and Apple silicon and Intel.

Why people look elsewhere

  • It's still a beta. The site offers “Download Beta”, and the version number ends in -dev.
  • No new build since early 2024. The file behind the download link was last changed on February 25, 2024, according to the date bahoom's server reports for it, and the release notes go no further than macOS 14 Sonoma.
  • The developer's own known issues. The HyperSwitch page lists three: previews sometimes take a few seconds to show, some preferences don't work at all, and there's no option to show minimized windows yet.

None of that means it won't run on your Mac. But if you want minimized windows, or a maker who ships fixes for the macOS you're on, these are the options.

Built in: ⌘Tab and App Exposé

macOS can do HyperSwitch's job in two steps. Press ⌘Tab to bring the app forward, then press ⌃↓ for App Exposé, which lays out all the open windows of the current app as live windows; you can also swipe down with three or four fingers if App Exposé is turned on in Trackpad settings, says Apple's Mission Control guide. Click the window you want. ⌘` steps through the front app's windows without any previews (Apple's keyboard shortcuts). For more on getting the most from it, see how to use App Exposé.

DockDoor

DockDoor is the closest match to HyperSwitch's idea. Keep ⌘Tab, and DockDoor can show the highlighted app's windows above the built-in switcher. It also has its own ⌥Tab switcher of every open window, with type to search, and window previews when you point at an app in the Dock. Windows on other desktops and displays are included, minimized and hidden ones too, which covers HyperSwitch's missing option. It's free and open source (GPL-3.0), and updated often: 1.40.7 came out on October 4, 2026. It needs Accessibility, plus Screen Recording for its previews, and its maker notes that a few apps built with unusual frameworks may show fewer windows.

AltTab

AltTab does HyperSwitch's job the other way round: instead of an app row with the selected app's previews, it shows a live thumbnail of every window at once, and the selected window full size before you switch. Minimized and hidden windows are included, the option HyperSwitch's known issues say is missing, and so are windows on other Spaces, each with a badge saying where it is. It starts on ⌥Tab and can be moved to ⌘Tab. The core app is free and open source (GPL-3.0); search and the App Icons and Titles styles come with AltTab Pro. Thumbnails need Screen Recording, and without it, its FAQ says, AltTab works but shows none. It's updated often: 11.9.2 came out on October 13, 2026.

Witch

Witch, from Many Tricks, lists apps, windows and tabs in a panel you configure, and previews are an option on top. Turn on mini previews and each row shows a small picture of its window; or let a preview of the selected window pop up after a delay you set, or on demand with the Space bar. Previews need Screen Recording, and Witch works without them. According to Witch's help, it can't preview hidden or minimized windows and shows a placeholder instead, and Many Tricks warns that mini previews slow the panel down. Version 4.7 came out on December 2, 2025.

Command-Tab Plus 2

Command-Tab Plus 2, from MacPlus Software, keeps HyperSwitch's apps-first flow: open it on ⌘Tab, ⌥Tab or another shortcut, pick an app, and press Z or ~ to move through that app's windows. Number keys jump to an app. By default it shows only apps on the current display or Space. Its page says it's compatible with macOS Tahoe, but it doesn't mention window previews, search or the permissions it needs, so if previews are what you liked about HyperSwitch, try it before you buy.

Flick Our app

Flick has no window previews, so if previews are the point, one of the apps above will suit you better. What it does instead is skip the app step: every window gets its own row with its app's icon and its title, so you go straight to the window. Minimized windows are listed by default and restored when you pick one; full-screen windows and windows on other Spaces are listed too. To see which window is selected without a preview, turn on the window locator, which outlines the selected window when it's on screen; it reads only where windows are, so Flick needs Accessibility but not Screen Recording. You can also type to search by app name or window title.

What Flick does

How we chose

We looked for switchers that take you to a particular window of an app, as HyperSwitch does, and that show signs of current support: a release in the last year, or, for Command-Tab Plus 2, its maker's statement that it works with macOS Tahoe. Every fact comes from the maker's own site, help or release notes, checked on October 15, 2026. The list isn't complete, and the order isn't a ranking. For switchers built around search or a ⌘Tab replacement, see alternatives to ⌘Tab. We make Flick, so weigh its entry with that in mind.

Questions

Does HyperSwitch work on macOS 26 Tahoe?

The bahoom site doesn't say. The latest release notes mention fixes for macOS 14 Sonoma, and the download hasn't changed since February 2024, so test it on your Mac before you rely on it.

Which of these handle minimized windows?

DockDoor shows minimized and hidden windows, and so does AltTab, with a badge saying where each one is. Witch shows a placeholder for them instead of a preview. Flick lists them by default and restores the one you pick.

Which ones need Screen Recording?

DockDoor needs it for its previews; without it, you get only its list of titles. AltTab needs it for its thumbnails and works without them. Witch needs it only for its optional previews. Flick doesn't ask for it, and App Exposé needs no permission. Command-Tab Plus 2's page doesn't say.
