Alternatives to ⌘Tab on Mac

⌘Tab is built in, quick and needs no setup, but it switches between apps, not windows. Here are the built-in shortcuts that fill the gap and eight Mac apps that list your windows, search them or take over ⌘Tab, so you can pick the one that fits how you work.

What ⌘Tab does well

Hold ⌘ and press Tab, and macOS shows your open apps, most recently used first; let go to switch. A single quick ⌘Tab takes you back to the app you just left, so flipping between two apps costs one keystroke, and while you hold ⌘ the arrow keys move the selection and Esc cancels (Apple's guide to app windows). It's on every Mac, needs no permission, and your fingers already know it.

Why people look elsewhere

Apple's list of Mac keyboard shortcuts describes ⌘Tab as switching to the next most recently used app. The limits follow from that:

  • One icon per app. Three Safari windows are one Safari icon, and ⌘Tab brings back whichever was last in front.
  • No search. You step through the row with Tab or the arrow keys, however many apps are open.
  • Apps, not windows. ⌘Tab brings an app forward, not a particular window, so a minimized window stays in the Dock.

The options below either add the missing step or replace ⌘Tab with something that works on windows. For the built-in switcher next to ours, see Flick vs ⌘Tab; for every built-in way to move between windows, how to switch windows on a Mac.

Built in: ⌘` and App Exposé

Two built-in tools cover the most common gap. ⌘` switches between the windows of the app you're using and ⇧⌘` goes the other way, so ⌘Tab to Safari, then ⌘` to the Safari window you want. App Exposé lays out every open window of the current app: press ⌃↓, or swipe down with three or four fingers if it's on in Trackpad settings (Apple's Mission Control guide). Mission Control, ⌃↑, shows every window on the desktop.

Mac keyboard shortcuts, Apple Support

Witch

Witch, from Many Tricks, can replace ⌘Tab or sit beside it. You can set up several switchers, say ⌘Tab for apps only and ⌥Tab for apps, windows and tabs, each laid out horizontally, vertically or in the menu bar, and press S in the panel to search. Many Tricks lists tab support for Safari, Chrome, Edge, iCab and Orion (beta). Previews are optional and need Screen Recording. One catch: while macOS Secure Text Input is on, Witch can't capture ⌘Tab. Version 4.7 came out on December 2, 2025.

Contexts

Contexts replaces ⌘Tab with a switcher that lists windows separately, and adds ⌘` for the front app's windows, a search window on ⌃Space, an auto-hiding sidebar of windows grouped by Space, and a trackpad gesture. Its search matches letters that aren't next to each other and favors initials. The latest release, 3.9.0, came out on August 27, 2022.

rcmd

rcmd changes the gesture: hold the right ⌘ key and press an app's first letter to jump to it, or launch it if it isn't running, while the left ⌘ key keeps its usual shortcuts. Its ⌘Tab replacement, in the free version, cycles windows and can skip minimized ones and those on other Spaces. Fuzzy search of apps and windows comes with rcmd Pro (14-day trial). rcmd asks for Screen Recording, which its FAQ says it uses to read window titles.

AltTab

AltTab is named after the Windows shortcut it brings back. It starts on ⌥Tab so it doesn't clash with ⌘Tab, and its FAQ says you can move it to ⌘Tab to replace the built-in switcher. Every window gets a live thumbnail, minimized, hidden and other-Space windows included, and the selected one is shown full size before you switch. The core app is free and open source (GPL-3.0); search, two more styles and extra shortcuts come with AltTab Pro, free for the first 14 days. It needs Accessibility, and Screen Recording for its thumbnails. Version 11.9.2 came out on October 13, 2026.

DockDoor

DockDoor is free and open source (GPL-3.0). Point at an app in the Dock to see previews of its windows, or hold ⌥ and press Tab for a switcher of every open window, with type to search. If you keep ⌘Tab, DockDoor can show the highlighted app's windows above it. Minimized, hidden and other-desktop windows show up too. It needs Accessibility, and Screen Recording for its previews.

Command-Tab Plus 2

Command-Tab Plus 2, from MacPlus Software, stays closest to ⌘Tab: an app switcher you can put on ⌘Tab, ⌥Tab or any shortcut. Press Z or ~ while it's open to move through the selected app's windows, or pick an app by number. By default it shows only apps on the current display or Space, and leaves hidden apps out. Its page doesn't mention search, previews or permissions, so we don't list any.

Raycast Switch Windows

Raycast is a launcher, and Switch Windows is one of its built-in commands: every open window in one searchable list, with its title and app; Return switches, and ⌘K can minimize, close, go full screen or hide the app. Give it a hotkey and it works anywhere, but you open it and pick rather than hold and release. Browser tabs come from separate Safari and Chrome extensions.

Flick Our app

Flick lists windows, not apps: every window of every app with a Dock icon gets its own row with its title, on every Space and display, minimized and full-screen ones included. Hold ⌥ and tap Tab, then let go; a quick tap flips back to the previous window. Type while you hold ⌥ to search by app, window title or file name, or press ⇧⌘Space to open straight into search. You can also give it ⌘Tab: Flick then replaces the macOS app switcher while it runs, and macOS gets ⌘Tab back when Flick quits. It shows icons and titles, not previews, needs Accessibility, and isn't notarized yet, so the first open needs a one-time approval.

What Flick does

How we chose

We included keyboard switchers that replace ⌘Tab or fill in what it leaves out, and that we could check on their maker's own site, documentation or update feed on October 15, 2026. Where a maker doesn't say something, we left it out rather than guess. The list isn't complete, and window managers that arrange windows rather than switch between them weren't considered. If you want previews first, see alternatives to HyperSwitch. We make Flick, so weigh its entry with that in mind. No link here is an affiliate link.

Questions

Do I have to give up ⌘Tab to use one of these?

No. Witch, Contexts and Command-Tab Plus 2 can use another shortcut, such as ⌥Tab, and AltTab and Flick use ⌥Tab unless you choose ⌘Tab. DockDoor's switcher opens with ⌥Tab, rcmd's letter switching uses the right ⌘ key, and Raycast runs from its own hotkey.

Which of these show window previews?

AltTab shows a live thumbnail of every window and DockDoor shows previews, and both need Screen Recording for them; Witch's previews are optional and need it too. Contexts, Raycast's Switch Windows and Flick list windows by title. Built in, App Exposé and Mission Control lay out live windows.

Is there a free option that lists every window?

AltTab's free version lists every window, with thumbnails, and DockDoor is free in full. Raycast's Switch Windows is free on macOS 26 with Apple silicon. Built in, Mission Control shows every window open on the desktop. Flick's free version never expires and switches between your 5 most recent windows; a license unlocks every window.
