A window is missing from Flick's list

Most of the time a setting is hiding it: an ignored app, Show only the active Space, or Show minimized windows turned off. If none of those applies, it's a kind of window Flick leaves out on purpose, or, in the free version, it's older than your 5 most recent windows.

Check your filters

Open Flick's settings from Settings in its menu bar menu, or the gear in the panel. Changes apply at once, even to an open panel.

  1. Is the app ignored?

Look in Settings › Exceptions › Ignored Apps. An ignored app's windows are left out of the list and search. Click the minus button next to the app to bring them back. More in ignore an app.

  2. Is the window on another Space?

With Settings › General › Show only the active Space on, windows on other Spaces are hidden, and a full-screen app is a Space of its own. With several displays, the Space showing on each one counts. It's off by default.

  3. Is the window minimized?

Settings › General › Show minimized windows is on by default. Turned off, minimized windows stay out of the list until you restore them.

  4. Is it inside a group?

With Tab grouping set to Group by app, an app with two or more windows is one row with a count: press → or click the count. Search results are never grouped.

Every option that shapes the list is in Flick's list settings.

Windows Flick leaves out on purpose

Flick lists every standard window and dialog from apps with a Dock icon, on every Space and display, hidden apps' windows included. These are left out by design:

  • Flick's own windows, such as Settings.
  • Windows of menu bar apps, which have no Dock icon.
  • Floating palettes, panels and overlays.
  • Sheets, such as a Save dialog: they're part of their window's row.
  • Picture in Picture windows.
  • Windows under 40 points wide or tall, unless they're minimized.
  • Windows an app has put away without closing them, such as the tabs behind the front tab of a Finder, Terminal or Preview window. Windows on other Spaces, minimized windows and hidden apps' windows are listed.

No setting adds these back: the only exceptions you can make remove apps.

Using the free version

The free version lists and searches your 5 most recent windows. The note at the bottom of the panel says so, such as Free version · 5 of 23 windows, and a search says how many matches it holds back, such as Free version · 2 more matches, never their titles. Click the note to open Settings › License.

  • Filters come first. A window your filters remove never takes one of the 5.
  • A “No windows” row takes one. Turn off Settings › General › Show apps without windows to leave all 5 to windows.
  • Using a window makes it recent. Switch to it once, from the Dock or by clicking it, and it's among your 5.

A license unlocks every window. See what the free version includes.

The whole app is one row

An app listed once, with “No windows” under its name while its windows are on screen, gave Flick no windows back. See an app shows one row instead of its windows. A row with a bold count at its right end is a group of that app's windows, or a browser window's tabs: press → or click the count to open it.

Slack, VS Code and other Electron apps

Some Electron apps report their windows only when asked, and Flick asks once it sees one of their windows on your current Space. Bring one onto your current Space, then open Flick again. More in windows from Electron apps don't appear.

Tabs in Finder or Terminal

A Finder, Terminal or Preview window with tabs is one row, named after the tab in front, because macOS puts away the tabs behind it. Move a tab to its own window to give it a row. See why Finder and Terminal tabs show as one row. Browser tabs are different: with a license, search finds them.

Still missing

  • No windows from any app? If Accessibility is on and Flick still lists nothing, follow Accessibility is on, but Flick sees no windows.
  • Did Flick just start? While it reads your windows for the first time, the panel says “Indexing desktop…”.
  • Did the window open while the panel was up? Rows don't move while the panel is open, so it's added at the end.
  • Is it further down? With List order set to Name A-Z, rows follow app names. Typing part of the title finds it either way.

Questions

Does Flick list windows on my other displays?

Yes, from every display, whichever one the panel opens on. Only Show only the active Space narrows it, to the Space showing on each display.

Why does the front app's windows list show a window the main list doesn't?

Flick's front app's windows (⌘` with the ⌘Tab trigger, or ⌥` if you turned it on) ignore Show minimized windows and Show only the active Space with a license, so they list every window of that app. In the free version both lists keep your filters and your 5 most recent windows, and the front app's list adds a line such as “3 more Safari windows beyond your 5 most recent”. More in switch between one app's windows.

Every window, one list.

Flick lists your windows on every Space and display, minimized and full-screen ones included.

The free version never expires and switches between your 5 most recent windows. A one-time license, from $9.49, unlocks every window and browser tabs.
