Reset all settings
-
Open Settings
Click Flick's menu bar icon and choose Settings. Icon hidden? Open Flick again from Applications or Spotlight while it's running.
-
Go to About
Click About, the last page in the sidebar, then click Reset All Settings… in the Reset settings row.
-
Confirm
Flick asks “Reset all settings?” and spells out what happens: “Shortcuts, appearance, window options, browser tabs and ignored apps go back to their defaults. Permissions, launch at login and your license are not changed.” Click Reset, and the next ⌥Tab uses the defaults.
A reset can't be undone, so note any setting you want to keep. Each one is explained in Flick's settings, one by one.
What goes back to its default
| Settings page | After a reset |
|---|---|
| General | List order Recency, Tab grouping Group by window, Show apps without windows and Show minimized windows on, Show only the active Space off, Matching Smart, Move pointer to the window after switching off, and Show menu bar icon on. |
| Appearance | Position Left, Show switcher on Display with the pointer, Hide app names and Wider switcher off, Text size Normal, Show where the selected window is Off, Ripple animation on. |
| Shortcuts | The switcher on, with Option ⌥ + Tab. When you let go while searching Switch to the selected result, Show number shortcuts on, the front app's windows on for ⌘` and off for ⌥`, and the search shortcut on, as ⇧⌘Space. |
| Browser Tabs | Every browser off, and Include private windows off. |
| Exceptions | The Ignored Apps list is emptied, so their windows are back in the list. |
Worth knowing before you click:
- If you used ⌘Tab, Flick moves to ⌥Tab, and macOS's own ⌘Tab and ⌘` work again. Choose Command ⌘ + Tab in Settings › Shortcuts to take them back.
- Browser tabs stop until you turn each browser on again in Settings › Browser Tabs. macOS doesn't ask again: Flick's permission to control the browser is still there.
- A hidden menu bar icon comes back. Turn off Show menu bar icon in Settings › General again if you prefer it hidden.
What stays as it is
- Permissions. Accessibility and Automation are macOS settings, so you won't have to grant them again.
- Launch at login. It's recorded by macOS, not by Flick's settings.
- Your license. The license and its seat aren't touched. To free a seat, use Remove License… in Settings › License.
- Update checks. Your answer about checking for updates automatically, and any version you chose to skip.
- Silenced shortcut warnings. A warning you turned off with Don't Warn About and the app's name stays off until you click Warn Again in Settings › Shortcuts. See shortcut conflict warnings.
Removing Flick from your Mac is covered in how to uninstall Flick.
Reset permissions too
Starting over because Flick can't see your windows? It's usually the Accessibility permission that needs resetting, not Flick's settings.
-
Clear Flick's Accessibility permission
In System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility, select Flick and click the Remove button (−). Or run this in Terminal, which resets Flick's entry and no other app's:
tccutil reset Accessibility com.flicknav.flick -
Clear its browser permissions
Only if you turned on browser tabs. This makes macOS ask again, once per browser, the next time you turn one on or click Allow… in Settings › Browser Tabs:
tccutil reset AppleEvents com.flicknav.flick -
Allow Accessibility again
Add Flick back with the Add button (+) and turn on its switch. Flick checks every second while the permission is missing, so your windows appear without a restart. Every step is in how to allow Accessibility.
Keep com.flicknav.flick at the endWithout it, tccutil resets that permission for every app on your Mac, and each one has to be allowed again. More in resetting privacy permissions with tccutil.
See the welcome window again
Choose Show Onboarding from Flick's menu bar menu. The welcome window walks through the same screens as the first time: permissions, your hotkey (Option ⌥ + Tab or Command ⌘ + Tab), the window position, the search shortcut and Start Flick at login. Each choice there changes your settings at once. The window also opens by itself whenever Flick starts without Accessibility.
Questions
Can I reset just one page of settings?
No, the reset covers all of them at once. To undo a single change, set it back by hand: each setting's default is in the table above. The search shortcut has its own Reset to Default button in Settings › Shortcuts.
Will resetting free my license or use another seat?
Neither. The license stays active on this Mac and keeps the same seat. Only Remove License… in Settings › License frees a seat.
Does deleting and reinstalling Flick reset its settings?
No. Settings are kept on your Mac outside the app, so a reinstall picks them up again. Use Reset All Settings… instead.
