Which display does Flick open on?

The one with the pointer, unless you change it: set Show switcher on to Display with the active window in Settings › Appearance, and Flick opens where your most recent window is. Either way, the list holds windows from every display.

Choose where the panel opens

  1. Open Settings

Click the Flick icon in the menu bar and choose Settings, or click the gear in the corner of Flick's panel.

  2. Go to Appearance

Click Appearance. Show switcher on is in the Position group, under the left, center and right choices.

  3. Pick a display rule

Choose Display with the pointer or Display with the active window. The change applies the next time Flick opens.

Show switcher onWhere Flick opens
Display with the pointerDefaultThe display your pointer is on. Good if your eyes follow the mouse.
Display with the active windowThe display showing most of the window you used last. Good if you work from the keyboard and the pointer sits wherever you left it.

Whichever display it picks, the panel opens at the left edge, in the center or at the right edge of that display, as set by Position just above. It's the same however you open Flick: ⌥Tab, ⌘Tab, the search shortcut or Search Windows in the menu bar menu. More on positions and sizes in Panel position, and on every other option in Flick's settings, page by page.

Flick opened on the wrong display

  • With Display with the pointer, Flick follows the pointer, not the keyboard. If you left the pointer on your other display, that's where it opens. Switch to Display with the active window, or turn on Move pointer to the window after switching so the pointer keeps up with you.
  • With Display with the active window, Flick uses the most recently used window that's on screen right now. A window that's minimized, belongs to a hidden app or sits on a Space no display is showing doesn't count, so Flick goes by the next most recent one that's visible. If no window is on screen, it opens on the pointer's display.
  • A window across two displays counts for the display that shows more of it.
  • The macOS app switcher picks its display by its own rules, which Flick's setting doesn't change. If you use ⌘Tab as Flick's trigger, Flick's panel replaces it and follows Show switcher on. How macOS gives each display its own desktops and menu bar: Displays have separate Spaces, explained.

The panel stays on the display it opened on until it closes, even if you move the pointer meanwhile.

Windows on every display

Flick keeps one list for all your displays, most recent first (or A to Z, if you chose Name A-Z). Picking a window on another display brings it forward where it is; Flick doesn't move windows between displays or resize them. If it's hard to tell which display the selected window is on, turn on the window locator: it outlines the selected window on its display while the panel is open.

Move the pointer after switching

Turn on Move pointer to the window after switching in Settings › General, in the Multiple displays group (“Only when the window is on another display.”). It's off by default.

  • When you switch to a window, or a browser tab, on a different display from the pointer, the pointer jumps to the middle of that window, kept on the window's display if the window spans two.
  • When the window is on the pointer's display, the pointer stays put. It also stays put for apps without windows and apps you open from search.
  • Flick only moves the pointer. It doesn't click.

Combined with Display with the pointer, this makes Flick follow you: switch to a window on your other display, and the next time you open Flick it appears there.

Show only the active Space with several displays

With Show only the active Space on in Settings › General, Flick counts the Space showing on each display, so windows on every display you can see right now stay in the list. Windows on Spaces that no display is showing leave it.

Whether each display has Spaces of its own is a macOS setting: Displays have separate Spaces, in System Settings › Desktop & Dock, in the Mission Control section. For how Flick marks windows on other Spaces, see Spaces, full screen and hidden windows.

Questions

Can Flick open on every display at once?

No. It opens one panel, on one display, chosen by Show switcher on.

Can I always open Flick on the same display?

No. The two choices are the pointer's display and the active window's display; there's no fixed display.

Can Flick move a window to my other display?

No. Flick switches to windows and leaves arranging them to macOS and to other apps. See how to move a window to another monitor.
