Check the setting for your trigger
-
Open Settings › Shortcuts
Click the Flick icon in the menu bar, choose Settings, then click Shortcuts.
-
Check Enable switcher shortcut
The front app's windows come with the switcher shortcut. With Enable switcher shortcut off, the Front App's Windows group is hidden and Flick doesn't respond to ⌘` or ⌥`. In ⌘Tab mode, macOS's own ⌘` works again.
-
Turn on Switch between the front app's windows
Flick keeps this choice separately for ⌘Tab and ⌥Tab. If you changed triggers recently, the switch you see now is the one for your new trigger, and it may be off.
-
Press the key that matches your trigger
⌘` with ⌘Tab, ⌥` with ⌥Tab. In ⌥Tab mode, ⌘` still belongs to macOS.
With ⌘Tab as the trigger and the setting off, ⌘` does nothing at all while Flick runs. That's expected: macOS's own ⌘` is turned off along with ⌘Tab, and it comes back when Flick quits or you switch Flick to ⌥Tab.
With ⌥Tab, ⌥` starts off
On many keyboard layouts, ⌥` is how you type accents. Once you turn the setting on, Flick takes ⌥` in every app, so it waits for you to choose. When your layout uses ⌥` for accents, Settings says so under the switch: “On your keyboard layout ⌥` types accents (⌥` then e makes è). While this is on, ⌥` switches windows instead, in every app.”
- ⌥` still types an accent. The setting is off. Turn it on, or keep it off if you need the accent.
- ⌥⇧` does nothing on its own. With ⌥Tab, it only moves back up once the list is open. Start with ⌥`.
- The key isn't where you expect. Flick uses the key that types ` on a US keyboard, by its position. On some layouts that key types something else. See keyboard layouts.
The app has one window, or none
- One window. Flick switches to it without showing the panel. If you're already in it, nothing changes on screen.
- No windows. An app with every window closed has nothing to list, so nothing happens. Use ⌥Tab or ⌘Tab to pick a window from any app.
- Flick's own Settings window is in front. Flick never lists its own windows. Click a window of another app, then try again.
- Windows Flick doesn't list. Floating palettes, panels, Picture in Picture and very small windows aren't in any of Flick's lists, and neither are menu bar apps. Some apps, such as Slack or VS Code, report their windows only when asked: see windows from Electron apps.
- Flick doesn't have Accessibility. Without it, Flick can't see any windows. In ⌘Tab mode, ⌘Tab and ⌘` stay with macOS until you allow Accessibility.
In the free versionThe list shows the app's windows that are among your 5 most recent, and a line under the header counts the rest, such as “3 more Safari windows beyond your 5 most recent”. If none of them are among your 5, the header reads “Safari · No windows”. That's the free version's limit at work, not a fault.
The app is ignored
Apps in Settings › Exceptions › Ignored Apps are left out of every Flick list, the front app's windows included, so the shortcut does nothing while one of them is in front. The actions menu's Ignore item (Ignore Safari, for example) adds an app there too, so check the list even if you don't remember adding it. To bring the app back, click the remove (−) button next to it. Ignore an app, or bring it back
Another app has the key
Only one app can have a shortcut: whichever claimed it first. When another app has ⌘` or ⌥`, a Shortcut Conflicts group appears at the top of Settings › Shortcuts, and Flick's menu bar menu shows the same warning, such as “⌘` is in use by another app”. Quit that app and Flick takes the key on its own. If you change that app's shortcut instead, open Flick's menu bar menu or Settings › Shortcuts so Flick tries again. Fix shortcut conflicts
Your own search shortcut can collide too. Record it on the same keys as the front app's windows and a note under the field says it can't work. Set it to ⇧⌘` and that key opens search rather than going back through the app's windows; ↑ still moves back up the list.
Questions
Why did ⌘` change after I installed Flick?
Only in ⌘Tab mode. Flick then takes over ⌘Tab, ⇧⌘Tab and ⌘` while it runs, and its ⌘` lists the front app's windows. To get macOS's own ⌘`, which switches between the windows of the app you're using, switch Flick to ⌥Tab or quit it. Why it can fail without Flick: ⌘` not working on a Mac.
Can I move the front app's windows to another key?
No. They always use your trigger and `. The search shortcut is the only shortcut you can set yourself.
Does it work in the free version?
Yes, within your 5 most recent windows. A license lists every window of the app. How the front app's windows work
