Tidy up without leaving the list

Close or minimize the selected window, or hide or quit its app, without switching to it first. Flick stays open and the list updates, so you can clear out several windows in one go.

Right-click, close, carry on.

Right-click a window's row and choose Close Window. The window closes, its row goes, and Flick stays open on the rest of your list.

A screen recording of Flick, made before 1.1: right-click a row, choose Close Window, and the list updates. In 1.1 the menu also lists Minimize Window, Close All Windows, Hide, Hide Others and Force Quit.

Act on the selected row.

Move to a row, then press the action's keys while you still hold the trigger. In a list that stays open after you let go, such as a search you started with Return, the ⌘ keys work with either trigger.

Every action for a row in one place. Open it from the keys above, or right-click or Control-click any row. It stays open when you let go of the trigger; Esc closes just the menu.

ItemKeyWhat it does
ActivateReturnSwitches to the window.
Minimize Window⌥⇧MMinimizes it to the Dock. Not offered for a window that's already minimized or in full screen.
Close Window⌥⇧WCloses that window; its title shows under the item.
Close All Windows of AppACloses every window of the app, on every Desktop, minimized ones included.
Hide App⌥⇧HHides the app. Not offered when it's already hidden.
Hide OthersOHides every other app.
Quit App⌥⇧QA normal quit, so the app can ask you to save.
Force Quit App…FAsks first: “App quits at once. Changes you haven't saved are lost.” Return confirms; Esc or ← goes back.
Ignore AppITakes the app and its windows out of Flick's list and adds it to Settings › Exceptions › Ignored Apps.

Opened from the keyboard, the menu starts on Activate and shows each item's key: ⌥⇧W and the rest while you hold ⌥, or ⌘W, ⌘M, ⌘H and ⌘Q with the ⌘Tab trigger or once you've let go. Opened with a right-click, it shows no keys and the letters you type go to the search, so typing never runs an action.

Good to know.

Flick stays open

After an action the list updates in place, so you can close one window after another. Let go of the trigger while the actions menu is open and the list stays up afterwards, until you press Return or Esc, or click.

Quit or Force Quit

Quit asks the app to quit normally, so it can ask you to save first. Force Quit ends it at once, which is why Flick asks you to confirm. When to force quit

Windows, apps and tabs

Close and minimize act on window rows only. An app's “No windows” row and a browser tab's row offer the app actions, and Flick doesn't close tabs.

Ignore is reversible

An app you ignore leaves the list, window and tab search, and the front app's windows; it can still show up under Apps in search. Remove it in Settings › Exceptions to bring it back. More about ignoring apps

In the free versionEvery action works on the rows you see, your 5 most recent windows. Close All Windows still closes all of that app's windows, including ones beyond your 5 most recent, the same as with a license. Not sure whether to close, minimize or hide? See minimize vs hide and closing every window at once.

Questions.

Will Quit lose my unsaved work?

Not unless quitting the app yourself would. Quit is a normal quit, so the app handles it as usual and can ask you to save. Only Force Quit skips that, and Flick asks you to confirm it first.

Why doesn't ⌥W close a window any more?

Since Flick 1.1, every letter you type while holding ⌥ goes into the search, so typing “whatsapp” never closes or hides a window on the way. Add ⇧: ⌥⇧W closes, ⌥⇧M minimizes, ⌥⇧H hides and ⌥⇧Q quits. With the ⌘Tab trigger, ⌘W, ⌘M, ⌘H and ⌘Q work as before.

Can Flick close or quit itself by mistake?

No. Flick doesn't list its own windows, and its actions never close, hide or quit Flick. Hide Others leaves it alone too.

Everything Flick does

Switch, close, move on.

Window actions are in the free version, on every row it lists.

The free version never expires and switches between your 5 most recent windows. A one-time license, from $9.49, unlocks every window and browser tabs.
